Søndervig is situated right on the coastline of the North Sea, close
to the Ringkøbing Fjord - a shallow lagoon on the westcoast
of Jutland - and in the midst of the unique dune landscape. Søndervig
has some of the best beaches on the
Danish west coast which attract scores of nature loving tourists yearly.
Sand Sculpture Festival is another great attraction here.
Theatre director and award winning set designer Martin Tulinius has been organizing huge sand sculpture events in Denmark, Germany and some other countries since 1996. Thanks to his effort, famous artists from countries like Australia, Brazil, Cyprus, France, Greece, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, and Turkey as well as Danish artists take part in this festival. Every year, these artists transform 8000
tons of sand to art, inspired by different themes.
The beautiful sculptures and the two hundred meter long and seven meter high sculpture wall of the Sand Sculpture Festival is an amazing thing to see ! The visitors, if they like, may work or try to work with sand too .
In 2017, the venue was the newly built S2017 island with the theme of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. The sculptures were huge – up to ten metre high.
In 2016, the theme was ”Africa’s
wild animals. The number of visitors was 148,200 . In 2017, it was more than that.
This festival is open for public and lasts for seven months, from May to November.
So, when in Europe, add Søndervig to your travel lst .
