The Periyar National Park , one of the tourist attraction in Kerala, is situated in Thekkady.   This sanctuary is famous for its dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forest and savanna grass land. Elephants, sambar, gaur, tiger, lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri langur have found their peaceful home here.

The Periyar National Park or The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 300 sq. m.  of which 140 sq.m is thick evergreen forest. This sanctuary is declared a tiger reserve in 1978.

A splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar dam across the Periyar river adds to the charm of the park. The greatest attractions here are the herds of wild elephants, bison and deer that come down to drink in the lake.This sanctuary can be accessed through  trekking, boating, jeep safari.

A spice plantation is also worth time spending.
