My naturelover friends, if you are in Tokyo and have some days to spend, please visit Nikko . This is a lovely place with serene scenic beauty.
Nikko is a small town at the entrance to Nikko National Park,
nestled in the mountains of Tochig Prefecture about 125 km north of Tokyo. This town is set amidst a forest of ceder
trees and surrounded by some of the country’s most spectacular sceanery.
Nikko had been a center of Shinto and Buddhist mountain
worship for many centuries and Nikko National Park continues to offer scenic,
mountainous landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, hot springs, wild monkeys and hiking
trails.
Nikko is most famous
for Toshogu, built in the seventeenth century. This is Japan's most lavishly decorated Shinto shrine and the mausoleum of
Tokugawa Ieyasu , founder of the Tocugawa Shogunate. Several other beautiful shrines and temples are clustered around the
town ,
Unlike most Shinto shrines, Toshogu is a riot of colour, gold
leaves and intricate carvings, depicting birds, flowers, dancing maide ns and
sages. The sacred stable, where a imperial horse is kept, contains the original
carving depicting the three wise monkeys.
Besides
Edo wonderland by Nikko National Park is a vast theme
park featuring a wide range of
attractions enables one to experience the customs, cultures and society of Edo
period. Ninja Performances are widely popular which showcases a wide variety of
combative techniques and displays of the uses of the tools developed by the
Ninjas and the parade of the oiran.
This is a 12 hour tour that we took from Tokyo on a Monday. This tour also operates on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. It departs
from Hamamatsucho Bus Terminal and returns toTabo Asakusa Station. An English speaking guide is available . Meal not included.
